Horizontal bone loss is the most common radiographic pattern of alveolar bone destruction seen in chronic periodontitis, characterised by a relatively even reduction in bone height across multiple adjacent teeth. The remaining bone crest lies approximately parallel to a line connecting the cementoenamel junctions of neighbouring teeth. It differs from vertical (angular) bone loss, in which bone resorption occurs at an angle, creating an osseous defect predominantly adjacent to one tooth.
