Osseous Coagulum

A mixture of cortical bone chips and blood collected during osteoplasty, used as an autogenous graft material.

Full Definition

Osseous coagulum is produced intraoperatively by collecting bone shavings and chips generated during rotary bone trimming, mixed with the patient's blood to form a graft material. It is one of the earliest described autogenous bone graft techniques in periodontics. Because it consists of cortical bone particles, its osteogenic potential is considered lower than cancellous bone grafts. Editors should note the distinction between osseous coagulum and bone blend, as the two preparation methods differ. The term appears in older periodontal surgery literature and may require contextual clarification in contemporary documents.
