Osseous surgery encompasses resective and, less commonly, additive bone procedures undertaken to correct the bony defects and irregular architecture resulting from periodontal disease. The most common form is resective osseous surgery, which includes osteoplasty (reshaping non-supporting bone) and ostectomy (removal of supporting bone). Editors should not conflate 'osseous surgery' with 'flap surgery', as the latter may or may not include osseous recontouring. The term appears in operative notes, surgical consent forms, and clinical research documents.
