Peri-implantitis
Pronunciation: peh-ree-im-plan-TY-tis
An inflammatory condition affecting the soft and hard tissues surrounding a dental implant, resulting in loss of supporting bone.
Full Definition
Peri-implantitis is characterised by bleeding on probing, suppuration, increased probing depths, and radiographic bone loss beyond the initial bone remodelling expected after implant placement. It is distinguished from peri-implant mucositis, which involves only soft-tissue inflammation without bone loss. The 2017 World Workshop formally defined peri-implantitis and established diagnostic thresholds. Editors should note the mandatory hyphen in 'peri-implantitis' and 'peri-implant' (as a modifier) and ensure consistent hyphenation throughout a document.
Usage
Usage note: Always hyphenate 'peri-implantitis' and all 'peri-implant' compound modifiers; the unhyphenated form is non-standard.
