Full Definition

TENS is an electrophysical modality widely used in PM&R for the management of acute and chronic pain. Small electrode pads placed on the skin transmit mild electrical impulses that are thought to interfere with pain signal transmission via gate-control mechanisms and endorphin release. In clinical documentation, TENS must be distinguished from NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation), which targets motor rather than sensory nerve fibers.
