Facilitation Technique

Therapeutic method to enhance motor responses and improve movement quality through sensory input.

Full Definition

Specialized intervention strategies designed to promote optimal motor function by providing appropriate sensory stimuli to the nervous system. These techniques include tactile, proprioceptive, and vestibular inputs to facilitate desired movement patterns and inhibit abnormal responses. Common facilitation techniques include quick stretch, joint approximation, resistance, and vibration. They are particularly important in neurological rehabilitation where normal motor control mechanisms may be impaired. Proper application requires understanding of neurophysiology and motor learning principles.

Usage

Usage note: Avoid confusion with general neuromuscular re-education, which encompasses broader retraining approaches.
