Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Also written as: IADL — Instrumental Activities of Daily Living

Complex functional tasks requiring higher-level cognitive and physical skills than basic ADLs.

Full Definition

Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs) include complex tasks such as managing finances, medication management, driving, shopping, and meal preparation. These activities require integration of cognitive and physical abilities and are often addressed in occupational therapy rather than physical therapy. Physical therapists may assess IADLs when mobility limitations impact these higher-level functions. IADL performance is particularly important for determining independent living capabilities in elderly patients.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish carefully from basic ADLs in documentation.
