Kyphosis

Pronunciation: kahy-FOH-sis

Excessive outward curvature of the thoracic spine creating a hunched or rounded back appearance.

Full Definition

Kyphosis refers to an exaggerated thoracic spinal curvature exceeding normal physiological limits, typically measuring greater than 40-45 degrees on lateral radiographs. Physical therapists assess postural kyphosis through visual examination, plumb line assessment, and functional testing. Treatment focuses on strengthening posterior trunk muscles, stretching anterior structures, postural education, and exercises to improve spinal alignment and prevent progression of the deformity.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish between postural (flexible) and structural (fixed) kyphosis.
