Lymphedema
Pronunciation: lim-fuh-DEE-mah

Full Definition
Lymphedema is a progressive condition characterized by the accumulation of protein-rich fluid in tissues due to dysfunction of the lymphatic system. It can be primary (congenital) or secondary (acquired through surgery, radiation, or infection). Physical therapists with specialized training provide Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) including manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging, therapeutic exercise, and patient education to manage this chronic condition and prevent complications such as cellulitis.
