Full Definition

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) is a form of manual therapy that uses the patient's own muscle contractions to restore normal joint range of motion and improve muscle function. The technique involves the patient performing a controlled isometric contraction against the therapist's resistance, followed by relaxation and gentle stretching into the newly gained range. MET is based on neurophysiological principles including post-isometric relaxation and reciprocal inhibition. This technique is particularly effective for treating joint restrictions, muscle imbalances, and hypertonic muscles while being gentle enough for acute conditions.
