Range of Motion

Also written as: ROM — Range of Motion

Measurement of joint movement capacity, assessed as active, passive, or active-assisted.

Full Definition

Range of Motion (ROM) refers to the degree of movement available at a joint, measured in degrees using a goniometer. Active ROM involves patient-generated movement, passive ROM involves therapist-moved joints, and active-assisted ROM combines patient effort with therapist support. ROM assessments identify joint limitations and guide treatment interventions. Normal values vary by joint and are compared to established norms and the contralateral side when possible.

Usage

Usage note: Specify type (active, passive, or active-assisted) when documenting.
