flap monitoring

Systematic postoperative assessment of tissue transfer viability using clinical and technological methods.

Full Definition

Flap monitoring is the systematic postoperative surveillance of transferred tissue to detect early signs of vascular compromise that could lead to flap failure. Monitoring typically involves clinical assessment of color, temperature, turgor, and capillary refill every 30 minutes to 2 hours initially, then gradually decreasing in frequency. Advanced monitoring techniques include Doppler ultrasound, pulse oximetry, near-infrared spectroscopy, and fluorescent angiography. Early detection of arterial insufficiency or venous congestion allows for prompt surgical revision and may salvage the flap.

Usage

Usage note: Document monitoring frequency and findings clearly for medicolegal purposes.
