heterotopic ossification

Abnormal bone formation in soft tissues, a potential complication following trauma or surgery.

Full Definition

Heterotopic ossification refers to the abnormal formation of bone and cartilage in soft tissues where bone does not normally exist. In plastic surgery, this complication can occur following trauma, burns, or surgical procedures, particularly those involving muscle or fascial planes. It can result in pain, decreased range of motion, and functional impairment. Risk factors include severe burns, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and genetic predisposition. Treatment may involve surgical excision, radiation therapy, or anti-inflammatory medications.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from normal callus formation during bone healing.
