STSG

Also written as: STSG — Split-Thickness Skin Graft

Split-thickness skin graft containing epidermis and partial dermis.

Full Definition

A split-thickness skin graft (STSG) includes the epidermis and a variable portion of the dermis, typically harvested using a dermatome. STSGs are versatile grafts that can cover large areas and have a higher survival rate than full-thickness grafts due to their reduced metabolic demands. They are commonly used for burn reconstruction, large defect coverage, and areas where primary closure is not possible. The donor site typically heals spontaneously within 1-2 weeks.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from FTSG (full-thickness skin graft) and mesh grafts (meshed STSG).

In Context

  • "The large defect was successfully covered with an STSG from the anterior thigh." — burn surgery report
  • "STSG donor sites were dressed with hydrocolloid dressing for optimal healing." — postoperative care instructions
