tissue expander

Inflatable medical device placed under the skin to gradually stretch tissue for reconstruction.

Full Definition

A tissue expander is a balloon-like medical device surgically placed beneath the skin and muscle to gradually stretch and create additional tissue for reconstructive purposes. The expander is slowly filled with saline solution over weeks or months through a small valve, allowing the overlying tissue to accommodate the increasing volume. This technique is commonly used in breast reconstruction following mastectomy, scalp reconstruction, and other areas requiring additional tissue coverage. Once sufficient tissue expansion is achieved, the expander is typically removed and replaced with a permanent implant or the expanded tissue is used to cover a defect.

Usage

Usage note: Specify whether referring to the initial expander placement or subsequent expansion fills.
