dermabrasion

Pronunciation: der-mah-BRAY-zhun

Surgical skin resurfacing technique using mechanical abrasion to remove damaged skin layers.

Full Definition

Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure that uses a rotating mechanical device to remove the outermost layers of skin, promoting regeneration of smoother, more even-toned skin. The technique is used to treat acne scars, sun damage, and other skin irregularities. Unlike microdermabrasion (a non-surgical cosmetic treatment), surgical dermabrasion requires anesthesia and has a significant recovery period. The procedure must be distinguished from chemical peels and laser resurfacing in treatment planning.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish surgical dermabrasion from cosmetic microdermabrasion in documentation.
