explantation

Surgical removal of previously placed breast implants, with or without replacement.

Full Definition

Explantation refers to the surgical procedure involving the removal of previously placed breast implants. This procedure may be performed for various reasons including implant complications (rupture, capsular contracture, malposition), patient preference for natural breast appearance, medical concerns, or as part of implant replacement surgery. The procedure involves careful dissection to remove the implant and may include capsulectomy (removal of scar tissue capsule) or capsulotomy (capsule release). En bloc capsulectomy, where the implant and intact capsule are removed together, is often preferred for textured implants or when breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is suspected. Recovery varies depending on whether simultaneous replacement or additional procedures are performed.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from capsulectomy (capsule removal) and specify whether replacement is planned.

In Context

  • "The patient elected for bilateral explantation without replacement due to capsular contracture." — Surgical consent form
