Full Definition
A hematoma is an abnormal collection of blood outside the blood vessels, typically occurring as a result of bleeding into tissues or body cavities. In plastic surgery, hematomas are among the most common complications following procedures such as facelifts, breast surgery, and body contouring operations. They may present as swelling, pain, and discoloration, and often require surgical drainage to prevent infection and optimize healing outcomes.

Usage note: Distinguish from seroma, which is a collection of serous fluid rather than blood.
