Z-plasty
Pronunciation: ZEE-plas-tee
Surgical technique using Z-shaped incisions to reposition scars and improve tissue mobility.
Full Definition
Z-plasty is a fundamental plastic surgery technique that involves creating Z-shaped incisions to transpose triangular flaps of tissue, effectively lengthening scars in one direction while shortening them in the perpendicular direction. This technique is used to release contractures, reposition scars to follow natural skin tension lines, and improve the appearance of linear scars. Multiple Z-plasties can be performed in series for greater effect. The angles of the Z typically range from 30 to 90 degrees, with 60 degrees being most common.
Usage
Usage note: Specify the angle of Z-plasty incisions (typically 60 degrees) in operative notes.
