Molecular tumor classification represents a paradigm shift from traditional morphology-based cancer typing to classification systems based on underlying molecular characteristics. These classification schemes use genomic alterations, gene expression patterns, methylation profiles, or protein signatures to group tumors with similar biological behavior and treatment responsiveness. Examples include the molecular subtypes of breast cancer (luminal A/B, HER2-enriched, triple-negative) and glioblastoma classification based on IDH mutation status. In precision oncology, molecular classification often provides more clinically relevant information than histological type alone, as tumors with similar molecular profiles tend to respond similarly to targeted therapies regardless of tissue of origin.
