AFP

Full Definition

Alpha-fetoprotein is a protein produced by the fetal liver and yolk sac that can be measured in maternal blood or amniotic fluid. Elevated AFP levels may indicate neural tube defects, multiple pregnancies, or other fetal abnormalities, while decreased levels may suggest chromosomal abnormalities like Down syndrome. AFP measurement is a key component of maternal serum screening programs and is also used to monitor certain pregnancy complications.
