Also written as: BPP — Biophysical Profile
Biophysical profile, a prenatal test assessing fetal well-being through ultrasound evaluation and fetal heart rate monitoring.
Full Definition
The biophysical profile (BPP) is a comprehensive prenatal assessment tool that evaluates fetal well-being through five components: fetal breathing movements, gross body movements, fetal tone, amniotic fluid volume (AFV), and reactive fetal heart rate pattern (nonstress test). Each component is scored as either 0 or 2 points, with a maximum total score of 10. The BPP is typically performed in high-risk pregnancies or when fetal compromise is suspected. Scores of 8-10 are considered normal, 6 is equivocal requiring repeat testing, and scores of 4 or less indicate significant fetal compromise warranting immediate delivery consideration. The test combines real-time ultrasound assessment with cardiotocography monitoring.
