CVS
Also written as: CVS — Chorionic Villus Sampling
Chorionic villus sampling; early prenatal diagnostic test performed between 10-13 weeks.
Full Definition
Chorionic villus sampling is a prenatal diagnostic procedure where a small sample of placental tissue (chorionic villi) is removed for genetic testing. It can be performed earlier than amniocentesis (10-13 weeks vs 15-20 weeks) but carries similar diagnostic accuracy for chromosomal abnormalities. The procedure can be done either transcervically or transabdominally depending on placental position.
