fetal movement counting

Maternal assessment of fetal activity patterns used to monitor fetal well-being, typically in the third trimester.

Full Definition

A simple method of fetal surveillance where pregnant women count and record fetal movements over specified time periods, usually starting around 28 weeks of gestation. Common protocols include counting 10 movements within 2 hours or noting the time required to feel 10 movements. Normal fetal movement patterns vary between pregnancies and individuals, but decreased fetal movement may indicate fetal compromise and warrants immediate evaluation. This monitoring method empowers patients in their care while providing early warning of potential problems. Healthcare providers must educate patients on proper counting techniques and when to seek evaluation.

Usage

Usage note: Document patient understanding of counting protocol and reporting thresholds.
