nuchal translucency
Pronunciation: NEW-kal trans-LOO-sen-see
Ultrasound measurement of fluid collection behind fetal neck used in Down syndrome screening.
Full Definition
A specialized ultrasound measurement taken between 11-14 weeks of pregnancy that measures the thickness of fluid at the back of the developing baby's neck. Increased nuchal translucency measurement is associated with higher risk of chromosomal abnormalities, particularly Down syndrome, and certain heart defects. This measurement is combined with maternal blood tests to calculate risk ratios in first-trimester screening protocols.
Usage
Usage note: Often abbreviated as NT in clinical notes but should be spelled out in patient communications.
