Full Definition
An umbilical cord cyst is a fluid-filled cavity found within the umbilical cord during prenatal ultrasound examination. These cysts can be true cysts (lined with epithelium) or pseudocysts (lacking epithelial lining). While some are isolated findings, umbilical cord cysts may be associated with chromosomal abnormalities, particularly trisomy 18, or other structural anomalies. Their presence typically warrants additional genetic counseling and detailed fetal anatomical survey.
