A blood pressure-independent measure of arterial stiffness from the heart to the ankle.

Full Definition

The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a non-invasive parameter that measures arterial stiffness along the entire arterial tree from the aortic valve to the ankle. Unlike pulse wave velocity, CAVI is theoretically independent of blood pressure at the time of measurement, making it more suitable for serial monitoring. CAVI values are calculated using pulse wave velocity, blood pressure, and arterial dimensions. Normal values are generally <8.0, with values >9.0 indicating significant arterial stiffening. Elevated CAVI is associated with increased cardiovascular risk and may precede overt cardiovascular disease. The measurement is obtained using specialized oscillometric devices and provides information about arterial aging and atherosclerotic burden.
