polyvascular disease

Atherosclerotic disease affecting multiple vascular territories simultaneously, indicating systemic atherothrombosis.

Full Definition

Polyvascular disease refers to the presence of atherosclerotic disease in multiple vascular beds, typically defined as involvement of coronary, cerebrovascular, and/or peripheral arterial territories. This condition represents systemic atherothrombosis rather than isolated vascular disease and is associated with particularly high cardiovascular event rates. Common presentations include combinations of coronary artery disease with carotid stenosis, peripheral arterial disease, or cerebrovascular disease. Patients with polyvascular disease require intensive risk factor modification and often benefit from more aggressive antiplatelet therapy, lipid-lowering therapy, and blood pressure management. The presence of polyvascular disease significantly increases both cardiovascular and non-cardiovascular mortality risk compared to single-territory disease.

Usage

Usage note: Implies multiple vascular territories; distinguish from multivessel disease within single territory.

In Context

  • "The patient's polyvascular disease included significant coronary stenosis, carotid plaque, and peripheral arterial disease." — Comprehensive vascular assessment
  • "Given the diagnosis of polyvascular disease, intensive medical therapy and dual antiplatelet therapy were initiated." — Treatment planning documentation
