A check socket — also called a diagnostic socket or test socket — is typically vacuum-formed from clear thermoplastic material (such as polypropylene or copolymer) over the positive cast of the residual limb. Its transparency allows the clinician to observe pressure points, pistoning, and soft-tissue behaviour during weight-bearing and ambulation trials. Adjustments are made to the check socket before the definitive laminated or thermoplastic socket is fabricated. Editors should not conflate check socket with preparatory prosthesis, which refers to the entire interim prosthetic system rather than just the socket component.
