In prosthetics, cosmesis refers to the soft foam and skin-toned cover applied over the structural components of an endoskeletal prosthesis to improve its lifelike appearance. It carries no structural load and serves purely an aesthetic function. Cosmesis is also used more broadly in clinical literature to describe any prosthetic or surgical intervention aimed at restoring normal appearance. Editors must avoid conflating 'cosmesis' with the adjective 'cosmetic,' as 'cosmesis' is a noun denoting the physical cover or the quality of appearance. The plural is 'cosmeses.'
