Definitive Prosthesis

A permanent, custom-fabricated prosthetic device prescribed after residual limb maturation is complete and a preparatory device has been trialled.

Full Definition

A definitive prosthesis is the final, custom-made prosthetic device fitted once the residual limb has stabilised in volume and shape following amputation and rehabilitation. It contrasts with the preparatory or immediate post-operative prosthesis used in earlier recovery stages. The device is fabricated to precise measurements and is intended for long-term use. In editorial contexts, 'definitive' should not be used interchangeably with 'permanent,' as prostheses require periodic replacement. Clinical documentation typically specifies the date of fitting and functional goals associated with the definitive device.

Usage

Usage note: Do not abbreviate to 'definitive' alone in clinical documents without prior contextual establishment of the full term.

In Context

  • "The patient was fitted with a definitive prosthesis six months post-amputation after successful completion of the preparatory phase." — Clinical progress note
