A prosthetic knee design with multiple pivot points that mimic the instantaneous centre of rotation of the anatomical knee, providing enhanced stability and swing-phase control.

Full Definition

A polycentric knee is a prosthetic knee joint unit characterised by a four-bar or multi-bar linkage mechanism that creates a shifting centre of rotation throughout the gait cycle. This design provides inherent stance-phase stability and a shorter functional leg length during swing phase, reducing the risk of toe catch. Polycentric knees are commonly prescribed for transfemoral and hip-disarticulation amputees at K2 to K4 functional levels. In editorial contexts, 'polycentric' is always lowercase unless beginning a sentence and should not be hyphenated. It is commonly confused with 'single-axis knee,' which has a fixed pivot point.
