A transtibial (below-knee) prosthetic socket design that concentrates weight-bearing load through the patellar tendon and other bony relief areas of the residual limb.

Full Definition

The Patella-Tendon-Bearing (PTB) socket is a conventional below-knee prosthetic interface in which the patellar tendon bar provides the primary load-bearing site, while bony prominences such as the tibial crest and fibular head are relieved to prevent pressure injury. Once the dominant transtibial socket design, PTB has been largely supplanted by TSB designs in contemporary practice, though it remains relevant in prosthetic literature and historical clinical records. Editors will encounter 'PTB' in older case files and comparative research; the acronym should be expanded at first use. Do not confuse 'PTB socket' with 'PTB brace,' which is an orthotic device for knee unloading.
