Terminal Device

Also written as: TD — Terminal Device

The functional end component of an upper-limb prosthesis, such as a prosthetic hand, hook, or specialized tool.

Full Definition

A terminal device (TD) is the distal-most component of an upper-limb prosthesis, serving as the functional endpoint that interacts with the environment. Terminal devices include prosthetic hands (cosmetic or functional), split hooks, and task-specific devices such as those designed for sports or occupational activities. In editorial contexts, the abbreviation TD should be expanded at first use. Terminal devices are described in device prescription forms, fitting summaries, and rehabilitation outcome documents. Editors should not confuse 'terminal device' with 'end effector,' a term more common in robotics literature.

Usage

Usage note: Abbreviate as TD after first full use. Do not use 'end effector,' which belongs to robotics terminology, in prosthetics clinical documentation.

In Context

  • "The prosthetist recommended switching from a cosmetic hand to a voluntary-opening hook as the terminal device for improved grip function." — Prosthetic fitting report
  • "The funding application listed the terminal device separately from the socket and pylon in the itemized cost breakdown." — Insurance prior authorization application
