Transfemoral Socket

The structural interface component of an above-knee prosthesis that directly encases and contacts the residual femoral limb segment.

Full Definition

The transfemoral socket is the critical load-bearing interface between the residual above-knee limb and the prosthetic system. Socket design, volume management, and fit directly affect the wearer's comfort, gait biomechanics, and skin integrity. Modern transfemoral sockets may employ flexible inner sockets within rigid frames, ischial containment geometry, or elevated-vacuum suspension. In editorial contexts, the term should not be reduced simply to 'socket' when disambiguation with other socket types is required. Proper capitalization is not applied to the term; it is written entirely in lowercase unless beginning a sentence.

Usage

Usage note: Do not abbreviate to 'socket' alone in clinical documents where multiple limb levels are discussed; specify the anatomical level for clarity.

In Context

  • "The clinical notes described a well-fitting transfemoral socket with ischial containment and a pin-lock suspension mechanism." — Prosthetist progress note
  • "Editors reviewing prosthetic reports should confirm that 'transfemoral socket' is not used interchangeably with 'transtibial socket,' as the two describe anatomically distinct interfaces." — Editorial style guide for rehabilitation documentation
