Volume Fluctuation

The natural variation in residual limb size over the course of a day or during the post-amputation period, which directly affects prosthetic socket fit.

Full Definition

Volume fluctuation describes the physiological changes in residual limb circumference and volume resulting from oedema resolution, diurnal fluid shifts, activity level, body weight changes, or systemic conditions such as cardiac or renal disease. Managing volume fluctuation is a central challenge in prosthetic fitting, often addressed through prosthetic sock management, adjustable socket systems, or elevated vacuum suspension. In editorial contexts, the term appears in clinical notes, fitting logs, and insurance justifications for elevated-vacuum systems. Editors should not conflate 'volume fluctuation' with 'socket pistoning,' which is a mechanical consequence of poor fit rather than a physiological cause.
