Functional Outcome Measure

A standardized assessment tool used to quantify a prosthetic user's activity and participation levels, often required for insurance justification.

Full Definition

Functional outcome measures in prosthetics are validated scales or performance tests—such as the Amputee Mobility Predictor (AMP), the Prosthetic Limb Users Survey of Mobility (PLUS-M), or the Trinity Amputation and Prosthesis Experience Scales (TAPES)—used to document a patient's functional capacity before and after prosthetic intervention. Editors working on clinical trial reports, rehabilitation journals, or insurance correspondence must recognize the full names, approved abbreviations, and correct capitalisation of these tools. 'Functional outcome measure' (lowercase) is the generic category; individual tool names are proper nouns.

Usage

Usage note: Write in lowercase as a generic category. When referring to a specific tool, use its proper name and approved abbreviation on first mention (e.g., Amputee Mobility Predictor [AMP]).
