The patellar tendon-bearing (PTB) socket is a classic transtibial socket design in which the anterior brim is contoured to direct loading forces onto the patellar tendon, medial tibial flare, and fibular shaft while offloading sensitive bony areas such as the tibial crest. Developed in the 1950s at the University of California, it remained the dominant below-knee design for decades. Editors will encounter the full form and the abbreviation PTB in clinical notes, prior authorisation letters, and outcome studies. The abbreviation should always be expanded on first use in patient-facing documents. It is increasingly contrasted with total-surface-bearing designs in modern clinical literature.
