The unwanted vertical movement of a prosthesis relative to the residual limb during the swing phase of gait, indicating inadequate suspension.

Pistoning describes the axial reciprocating motion that occurs when a prosthetic socket loosens its grip on the residual limb, allowing the device to slide up and down with each step. This phenomenon is a primary indicator of suspension failure and can result in skin abrasion, blistering, reduced proprioception, and inefficient gait mechanics. Prosthetists assess pistoning clinically by observing socket-limb movement during walking or by using motion-capture tools.
