Prosthetic Foot

A terminal device designed to replicate foot function at the distal end of a lower-limb prosthesis, available in various designs from non-articulating to multiaxial energy-storing types.

Full Definition

The prosthetic foot is the component that contacts the ground and must manage shock absorption, push-off, and terrain adaptation across a range of activity levels. Categories include the solid ankle cushion heel (SACH) foot, single-axis foot, dynamic-response or energy-storing-and-returning (ESAR) foot, and multiaxial foot. Editors must be careful to distinguish prosthetic foot type in documentation, as each carries distinct L-codes and reimbursement implications. The term 'prosthetic foot' should not be abbreviated to 'foot' alone in clinical records without prior contextual establishment, as this risks ambiguity. Foot category selection is driven by the patient's K-level and activity demands.
