The transfemoral socket is the most critical component of an above-knee prosthetic system, as its fit directly governs comfort, control, and functional outcome. Modern designs include the ischial containment socket and the more traditional quadrilateral socket, each distributing weight and rotational forces differently through the pelvis and residual femur. Editors working with prosthetics literature must recognise that 'transfemoral socket' and 'above-knee socket' are synonymous but that 'transfemoral' is the preferred clinical term. Socket type should always be specified in documentation rather than left as the generic 'socket'.
