Facebow
Pronunciation: FAYS-boh
A caliper-like instrument used to record the spatial relationship of the maxillary arch to the temporomandibular joints and transfer this relationship to an articulator.
Full Definition
A facebow (also called an earbow when anatomical ear rods are used) establishes the hinge axis orientation of the patient's maxilla relative to the condylar axis, enabling accurate mounting of maxillary casts on an articulator. The record is essential for restorations that require precise occlusal planning. Editors must not confuse the facebow with the articulator itself; the facebow is the measuring instrument, whereas the articulator simulates mandibular movement. Facebow should be written as one word; 'face bow' (two words) is non-standard.
Usage
Usage note: Spell as one word. Distinguish from 'articulator'; the facebow records the relationship, while the articulator reproduces it.
