Occlusal Vertical Dimension
The measured distance between two selected anatomical points when the teeth or occlusal rims are in contact.
Full Definition
Occlusal Vertical Dimension (OVD) is a key prosthodontic measurement defining the lower facial height when the occluding surfaces of the maxillary and mandibular arches are in contact. It is often recorded using anatomical landmarks such as the tip of the nose and the chin. Editors must not confuse OVD with Rest Vertical Dimension (RVD), which is measured with the mandible in physiologic rest position; the difference between the two is the freeway space. OVD is critical in complete denture, implant prosthetic, and full-mouth rehabilitation documents.
Usage
Usage note: OVD and VDO are both accepted abbreviations; ensure consistency within a single document. Do not interchange with 'rest vertical dimension'.
