Psychiatric concordance rate measures the proportion of pairs (most commonly twins, but also siblings or other relatives) where both members share the same psychiatric diagnosis or trait. Concordance rates are fundamental to psychiatric genetics research, as higher rates in identical twins compared to fraternal twins suggest genetic influences on the disorder. The measure can be calculated as pairwise concordance (proportion of affected pairs where both are affected) or probandwise concordance (proportion of co-twins who are affected given that the proband is affected). Concordance studies have been instrumental in establishing the heritability of major psychiatric disorders and continue to inform our understanding of gene-environment interactions in mental health.
