Full Definition

A statistical measure that compares the observed prevalence of a psychiatric disorder in a study population to the expected prevalence based on a reference population, after adjusting for differences in demographic characteristics such as age, sex, or other relevant factors. This ratio allows researchers to determine whether a particular population has higher or lower rates of psychiatric disorders than would be expected based on its demographic composition. A standardized prevalence ratio greater than 1.0 indicates higher than expected prevalence, while a ratio less than 1.0 suggests lower prevalence. This measure is particularly useful for comparing psychiatric morbidity across different geographic regions, time periods, or population subgroups.
