BPRS

Also written as: BPRS — Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale

A standardized rating scale used to assess the severity of psychiatric symptoms in clinical trials and research.

Full Definition

The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale is a clinician-administered assessment tool that evaluates 18 psychiatric symptom constructs including anxiety, depression, hallucinations, and unusual thought content. Originally developed in the 1960s, it remains widely used in psychiatric research to measure symptom severity and treatment response. The scale uses a 7-point rating system where higher scores indicate greater symptom severity. It is particularly valuable for assessing patients with psychotic disorders and monitoring changes over time in clinical trials.
