Psychometric validation is the systematic evaluation of measurement instruments used in psychiatric research to ensure they accurately and consistently measure the psychological constructs they claim to assess. This process involves establishing several key properties: reliability (consistency of measurements across time and raters), validity (whether the instrument measures what it purports to measure), responsiveness (ability to detect clinically meaningful changes), and acceptability (feasibility and burden for patients and researchers). Validation studies examine internal consistency, test-retest reliability, inter-rater reliability, content validity, construct validity, criterion validity, and sensitivity to change. Proper psychometric validation is essential for regulatory approval of new assessment tools and for ensuring meaningful interpretation of clinical trial results.
