Avolition

Pronunciation: ay-voh-LISH-un

A negative symptom of schizophrenia characterized by lack of motivation or drive to pursue goal-directed activities.

Full Definition

Avolition represents a severe reduction in motivated, self-initiated, purposeful activities. It is considered one of the primary negative symptoms of schizophrenia and can significantly impact daily functioning. Patients may appear lazy or unmotivated, but avolition represents a genuine neurobiological symptom rather than a character flaw. It manifests as difficulty initiating and sustaining activities such as work, school, or self-care. This symptom is particularly challenging to treat and often persists even when positive symptoms are well-controlled.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from depression-related amotivation by context of other negative symptoms.

In Context

  • "Severe avolition prevented the patient from maintaining employment despite adequate symptom control." — Disability evaluation report
