LOF

Also written as: LOF — Level of Functioning

Level of functioning, a measure of a patient's ability to perform daily activities and social roles.

Full Definition

Level of functioning (LOF) refers to an assessment of how well a patient can perform activities of daily living, maintain social relationships, and fulfill occupational or educational responsibilities. This evaluation encompasses multiple domains including self-care, interpersonal relationships, work or school performance, and independent living skills. Clinicians may use structured assessment tools or clinical observation to determine LOF. Changes in functioning often serve as important indicators of illness progression, treatment response, or the need for additional support services. Documentation of LOF is crucial for treatment planning and determining appropriate levels of care.

Usage

Usage note: May be spelled out as 'level of functioning' in formal reports; acceptable as LOF in clinical notes.
