Full Definition

SLUMS (Saint Louis University Mental Status) is a cognitive screening tool designed to detect mild cognitive impairment and dementia. This 30-point examination evaluates orientation, memory, attention, and executive function through tasks like drawing a clock, remembering items, and performing calculations. Unlike the Mini-Mental State Examination, SLUMS includes more challenging items that can better identify early cognitive decline. The test takes approximately 7 minutes to administer and uses education-adjusted scoring. Editors should capitalize all letters when referring to this assessment tool.
